YouTube To Boost Gaming Support, Rival Twitch

YouTube’s foray into gaming continues, with a new blog post from the company explaining how it will support video game content in the future. With high profile departures from Twitch to YouTube from the likes of TimTheTatMan and Dr Lupo amongst others, 80 billion gaming-related video views, 90 million hours of live stream content, and 250 million gaming videos uploaded, YouTube, with all its investments, is officially on the fast track to gaming supremacy.

“We’re currently working on upcoming products and features to meet these demands and others–including Gifted Memberships, as well as Live Redirect for Gaming, which will let you seamlessly send your viewers directly to another live stream once yours ends,” the blog post states. “We’re also exploring other perks for YouTube Gamers through our subscription services. Our recent partnership with the Discord app gives Premium members access to Discord Nitro for free, and Discord Nitro users get free access to YouTube Premium. Efforts like this are meant to help gamers further expand their community and likewise help viewers discover other creators. And we’re nowhere near done with improving live streaming on the platform for creators and viewers alike.”

In the future, YouTube will work on new tools to improve the discoverability of live content, more ways to monetize videos, and improved chat features.

These features in particular will bring YouTube Gaming in line with the Twitch standard. Yet, as many streamers continue to be disillusioned with Twitch – from the hate raids to the poor implementation of new features and the high profile leak – the draw of YouTube is becoming stronger and will bring some healthy competition to streaming platforms. YouTube appears to be a serious rival to Twitch and may end up surpassing them soon.
