It appears that Apple Inc. now considers itself a gaming company. This comes after a regulatory filing by the tech giant said the organization’s products compete as gaming platforms against traditional video game companies like Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo. Prior to this announcement, Apple said it only competed with Google’s Android phones and Microsoft’s Windows OS.
This shift in focus to gaming shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. A recent report suggested gaming generates more revenue for Apple than it does for Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. According to an analysis from The Wall Street Journal, Apple earned $8.5 billion during the 2019 fiscal year, which was more than Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony generated during the same period.
Apple is continuing its expansion into video games with plans to launch a mixed reality headset. According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, Apple is aiming to make a headset that can handle “high-quality” virtual reality games “with both fast chips and high-res displays.”
At this time, the mixed reality headset does not have an official release date. However, Gurman says the device will arrive “as early as” 2022.
