Tencent Posts Q3 Financial Results, Acquires Wake Up Interactive, Removes Fish Shooting Games From App Stores

Tencent Holdings Ltd. recently posted the company’s financial results for the third quarter of 2021. The organization reported Q3 2021 revenues of $22 billion, signifying a 13% increase from the third quarter of last year. The business still saw growth even as Chinese regulators begin to crack down on gaming and technology companies.

Shortly after that announcement, on November 12th, Tencent revealed it had acquired Wake Up Interactive. Tencent received a 90% stake in the company for almost $44 million. Wake Up Interactive is famous for creating hit Nintendo Switch games like Ninjala and Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes.

Then, in a somewhat surprising move, Tencent said that it would be removing popular fish shooting games from the company’s app stores due to a “risk inspection” campaign brought on by Chinese regulators amid the country’s gaming crackdown. These titles were removed because regulators disapprove of certain “gambling elements in these games,” according to the South China Morning Post.

“MyApp recently conducted a risk inspection on all the fish shooting games on the platform,” a Tencent spokesperson recently said. “Users who have already downloaded these games won’t be affected. They can use and update the apps as they normally would.”
