With esports becoming more and more popular in New Zealand, Wellington-based company, Victory Up, has now launched an online tournament site for gamers, with tournaments beginning the last week of November. The platform will enable both casual and competitive gamers the chance to compete for rewards, both virtual and in real life. Victory Up also has hopes of working with gaming communities across New Zealand to provide specific tournaments to suit their individual needs.
Victory Up owner Henry Lawton said that this project will provide avenues for console and computer gamers to test their abilities against others. Lawton believes that this project will “establish the foundations to build some solid pathways,” in New Zealand’s small Esports industry. “I’ve always believed that we have the best gamers in the world, by far, we just don’t have the opportunities to demonstrate it.”
The platform had undergone six months of open beta-testing to ensure the usability of the site was viable. Users will be able to register for free or pay for a membership, with rewards tiered to suit. Esports broadcaster and professional tournament organizer Let’s Play Live said that the work being done by Victory Up will strengthen professional leagues in the future “as better talent comes through.”
User profiles will also be a main feature on the site, allowing users to connect with others’ streaming and social media platforms, building a portfolio. Console (Playstation and Xbox) players will be a main focus for the platform due to many international leagues shifting to computer only.
