Atari Celebrates Company’s 50th Anniversary, Launches AtariXP Program

This year will be Atari’s 50th birthday. To celebrate reaching the half-century milestone, the company is launching a new commemorative logo the features the classic “Fuji” symbol with a black, white, and gold color-scheme design.

“We are celebrating 50 years since Atari was formed as a company, and 50 years since Atari really launched the modern video game industry,” Atari CEO, Wade Rosen told Adweek in an email. “Over those 50 years, Atari has grown into a brand that is recognized worldwide, and it remains indelibly associated with games and gaming culture. As the industry continues to expand with new gaming experiences, and gaming continues to play a growing role in culture, Atari will not only continue to grow in value—it has the opportunity to again play a transformative role in the gaming industry.”

Days later, the organization announced it would be launching the AtariXP Program, which will offer users a chance to access games that were never widely released for the Atari 2600 gaming console despite being developed by the company. The three games that will first be released are Aquaventure, Saboteur, and Yars’ Return.

Each game is available for $49.99 as a single cartridge. A Collector’s Edition of each title, which comes with a classic-style game box, instruction manual, poster, and hardcover art book, costs $149.99.
