Esports doctors want us to know just how important good posture and taking breaks are when gaming. Back pain, neck pain, headaches, and other injuries can accrue due to too much time spent gaming or while gaming in a bad position. Many of these injuries can be avoided, however, by taking the correct precautions.
“If you’re playing in a general area of the living room, you’ll want to sit on a more supportive chair,” said Drew Schwartz, chiropractor for Cleveland Clinic and the Esports Medicine Team. “I am not sitting on a couch that is super comfortable but adds no support or does not support my body at all. We want to sit on, if we can, an office chair would be great.”
Dr. Schwartz also spoke about the importance of the 20-20-20 rule, which can help with eye strain. It works by forcing yourself every 20 minutes to look at something 20 feet away, preferably with green space and natural light, for 20 seconds. Breaks like these aren’t just important for your eyes he says, but also your neck and back too.
Getting regular movement is also important. Even something like walking around for a few minutes can do wonders for your body. All these steps should be taken to prevent something much worse from happening, so address them before you start hurting.
