Activision-Blizzard recently released its financial results for the last quarter of 2021 as well as the entire fiscal year. This data showed that Call of Duty Vanguard, which was developed by Sledgehammer Games, did not outperform the release of Treyarch’s Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War, which came out in November of 2020.
Moreover, Activision-Blizzard reported a decline in net bookings for PC and console devices. Additionally, engagement in Call of Duty Warzone was down last year when compared to 2020.
In-game investments were higher last year than before the launch of Call of Duty Warzone in March of 2020. The report showed that players spent over $1 billion on Call of Duty Mobile in 2021.
It wasn’t all bad news for the video game giant. The company did confirm that Infinity Ward would be developing the next Call of Duty game as well as upcoming Call of Duty Warzone experiences.
The Profit‘s Take:
This news should not surprise anybody. Most of us in the industry knew that Vanguard was going to be one of the weaker entries in the franchise. It feels that Call of Duty, as a whole, is on the decline. Why can nobody just admit that maybe this product isn’t that good anymore? Everybody is coming up with all these different reasons for the game’s struggles: bad marketing, bad business management, etc. Maybe people are just tired of the same old Call of Duty shooter games. If this were an Xbox exclusive for Game Pass, I think the narrative would be different. We don’t know the sales numbers for Halo Infinite outside of what it does on Steam, but we assume it did well because Xbox sold more Game Pass subscriptions. If COD Vanguard were on Game Pass exclusively, it wouldn’t matter how many units it sold, as long as the number of Game Pass subscriptions continues to grow. The product just isn’t that good or exciting anymore. Most of the developers at these AAA studios got lazy. They thought, “people are going to buy Call of Duty every year anyway, so we don’t have to make things that different.” A new map here, a new character there, and so on. They no longer felt a need to make innovations within the game. Fortnite is on the same decline path as Call of Duty, too. I am not bullish at all on Fortnite even though they are surviving and generating a lot of revenue. I don’t think the first-person shooter genre has lost its appeal yet. We just need a new game to break the mold and generate excitement in the world of FPS games.
