Microsoft CEO Compares The Metaverse To Games

In a recent interview with The Financial Times, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella went on the record to discuss how the role of Microsoft in gaming informs relationships with the company’s communities and customers. Nadella had an interesting but potentially validating response.

“Take what’s happening with the metaverse,” said Nadella. “What is the metaverse? Metaverse is essentially about creating games. It is about being able to put people, places, things [in] a physics engine and then having all the people, places, things in the physics engine relate to each other.”

Nadella’s acknowledgment that the metaverse is about creating games, affirms the initial reaction to the metaverse being just that… a game. Nadella touched on other applications of the metaverse, including simulating a factory, which he referred to as a “game-playing exercise.” But, his belief that the metaverse will become a wider-reaching concept was most illustrated with one quote: “You and I will be sitting on a conference room table soon with either our avatars or our holograms or even 2D surfaces with surround audio. Guess what? The place where we have been doing that forever… is gaming.”

So, maybe the metaverse is a game, maybe it’s a lifestyle, or maybe it’s still a mystery. Regardless, Nadella believes it will be a big part of the future, not just in gaming, but in everyday life as well.
