News Profit's Takes

Valve May Not Be Getting A Steam Pass But Could Be Getting Game Pass

Gabe Newell has been keeping himself busy since the February 25th launch of the Steam Deck. After comparing Valve’s new product to the iPhone, the company’s founder was asked if we could soon see a subscription service for the Steam Deck or if Xbox’s Game Pass would be coming to the device.

“I don’t think it’s something that we think we need to do ourselves, building a subscription service at this time,” Newell said. “But for their customers, it’s clearly a popular option, and we’d be more than happy to work with them to get that on Steam. We’ve talked to people there quite a bit about that topic. If your customers want it, then you should figure out how to make it happen. That’s where we’re at.”

Clearly, Newell currently has no interest in launching a “Steam Pass” subscription service. With that being said, it doesn’t necessarily mean we won’t ever see Xbox’s Game Pass on the Steam Deck. Only time will tell.

The Profit‘s Take:

I think it would be fantastic to bring Game Pass to the Steam Deck. It would be a HUGE bonus for Valve. I’m just surprised that they don’t want to do a Game Pass-style product themselves. They have the entire Steam catalog and all of the developer relationships. It’s definitely something Valve could bring to market on their own, but my guess is they don’t want to do anything that threatens their current (and highly profitable) business model.
