On March 7th, the Detroit Red Wings Foundation, the charity arm of the NHL team of the same name, announced it had joined forces with The Children’s Foundation to launch an Esports Lounge for youth members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan (BGCSM). An opening ceremony for the venue was held on March 9th at the Lloyd H. Diehl Club.
The lounge was completed following a $300,00 investment from both the Red Wings Foundation and the Children’s Foundation. This initiative aims to provide more scholastic and career opportunities to young people interested in becoming members of the global gaming community.
“The partnership with the Detroit Red Wings and The Children’s Foundation brings so many resources to the youth in our BGCSM ecosystem,” said Shawn H. Wilson, the President of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan. “Beyond the amazing Egaming league play, within the new facility youth will have the opportunity to receive paid workforce and tech entrepreneurship experience, which ensures they leave our Clubs career and start-up ready!”
The Esports Lounge will be the first of three additional gaming lounges that will be established at BGCSM locations by the Red Wings Foundation and The Children’s Foundation. The two organizations have committed to building a total of five esports lounges between now and the end of the year.
