Development Has Begun On A New Game In The Witcher Series

A new game is coming to the Witcher series. On March 21st, CD Projekt Red announced the company has begun developing a new Witcher game. Based upon current teasers, this title is expected to be called The Witcher: A New Saga Begins.

According to the CDPR, this open-world game comes as the result of a partnership between CD Projekt Red and Epic Games. While details on the game are scarce, CDPR said it is very exciting to start this new journey since it marks “the beginning of a multi-year strategic partnership with Epic Games.”

This is also a big moment in the series because CD Projekt Red announced that the game will run on Unreal Engine 5 rather than the company’s own REDengine. According to CDPR, Epic’s engine would be better for creating open-world gaming experiences.

“From the outset, we did not consider a typical licensing arrangement; both we and Epic see this as a long-term, fulfilling tech partnership,” CD Projekt Red CTO Paweł Zawodny said. “It is vital for CD Projekt Red to have the technical direction of our next game decided from the earliest possible phase as in the past, we spent a lot of resources and energy to evolve and adapt REDengine with every subsequent game release. This cooperation is so exciting because it will elevate development predictability and efficiency, while simultaneously granting us access to cutting-edge game development tools. I can’t wait for the great games we’re going to create using Unreal Engine 5!”

At this time, not much else is known about the game. Unsurprisingly, a release date for this title has not yet been officially announced.

The Profit‘s Take:

This isn’t a very business-y story. Interestingly, this will NOT feature Geralt, the game’s big star and the character played by Henry Cavill in the Netflix series. It’s surprising for them to create a failure like Cyberpunk 2077, go back to a classic, but then get rid of the character that everybody loves. It feels like you should go back to something very familiar as a retreat from your other failure. You already got in trouble for announcing a game years before it was ready. An article like this only hurts CDPR.
