One of the most famous names in gaming history is warning against monetization within the industry. After speaking with BBC to honor the 30th anniversary of the release of Civilization, Sid Meier explained that gameplay is still the most important aspect of making successful video games.
“The real challenge and the real opportunity is keeping our focus on gameplay,” Sid Meier said during the interview. “That is what is unique, special, and appealing about games as a form of entertainment. When we forget that and decide it’s monetization or other things that are not gameplay-focused when we start to forget about making great games and start thinking about games as a vehicle or an opportunity for something else, that’s when we stray a little bit further from the path. I think we need to be sure that our games continue to be high quality and fun to play – there are so many forms of entertainment out there now. We’re in a good position… but we need to be sure we realize how critical gameplay is – and how that is the engine that really keeps players happy, engaged, and having fun.”
It is significant when a figurehead like Sid Meier provides commentary on the state of the video game industry. Not only has he been a member of the gaming sector for over 40 years, but he was also inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame for his contributions to the industry. He is best known for creating the hit video game series Civilization.
