Xbox Looking To Publish Cloud Games, Reaches Out To Developers

In a recently shared video, Xbox Game Studio Publishing’s Kim Swift went through the objectives of the organization’s cloud gaming division that was created when she was appointed senior director of cloud gaming in June of 2021. During the video, Swift called for cloud-native developers to reach out.

“We’re a first-party publisher and we’re really looking to work with game developers to help them create cloud-first titles of their dreams,” said Swift. “We’re here to provide the glue between our new cloud platform with xCloud and you as the developer, to get you what you need in order to succeed. We plan to provide xCloud integration support, assistance with their tech stack, cloudware APIs, be a liaison overall, to xCloud and other cloud teams in Microsoft.”

The division is looking for games that have “high levels of engagement, broad appeal and reach,” she said, and the “potential to build meaningful communities, champion diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.”

Microsoft recently launched two new initiatives that aim to give more developers access to cloud functionality when making games.

Announced during Game Developers Conference, the first is ID@Azure: a suite of free tools and resources that help developers integrate cloud-based gaming services into their titles, regardless of which platforms they’re developing for. The second is the Azure Game Development Virtual Machine, a cloud-based workstation that is geared specifically towards game production and enables developers to access key tools and services unconstrained by the specs of their machine or their geographical location.
