Could India Legalize Fantasy Esports?

Fantasy Football, fantasy basketball, fantasy baseball…and now fantasy esports? India is looking to bring esports to the mainstream sports ecosystem with its inclusion on the Rajasthan Virtual Online Sports (Regulation) Bill, released by the Revenue Department, however it is facing strong opposition from the Esports Federation of India (ESFI). The ESFI has deemed this bill “detrimental to the growth of esports” in the country, and is making a strong push to have it removed from the draft.

“Esports is a sport and it cannot be clubbed with fantasy sports,” reads a letter from ESFI. “It is recognized as a sport by the International Olympic Committee, which is the apex body of sports along with the Olympic Council of Asia, Commonwealth Games etc. And they have included esports in their multiple events.”

Esports is governed through recognized international and continental federations like the International Esports Federation, Asian Esports Federation, and Pan American Esports Confederation.

Many countries under the scope of these organizations have acknowledged esports as a sport, and are regulating the same under their sports laws.
