The University Of Wisconsin-River Falls Adds Varsity Esports Program

The University of Wisconsin River-Falls (UWRF) has launched its esports varsity intercollegiate program, made official on June 1st. The program will be co-ed and will have a dedicated esports arena ready in the fall of 2022 in the Chalmer Davee Library. The university plans to begin varsity level competitions in the 2023-2024 academic year.

“We are excited to announce the addition of a varsity Esports program here at UWRF,” said Crystal Lanning, Athletic Director at UWRF. “Competitive gaming has experienced tremendous growth over the past few years and we look forward to welcoming a new demographic of competitive student-athletes to join Falcon Athletics.”

UWRF has become the second Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference school to add esports as a varsity sport, after the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

The school has yet to announce any specific game offerings.

Meanwhile, UWRF has begun a national search for a full-time head coach to lead the program, with the goal of filling the position by the 2022-2023 academic year. The university hopes this will give the new hire enough time to recruit and build a competitive schedule by 2023-2024.
