What The European Union Is Making Mandatory For Gaming Laptops By 2027

The European Union has passed a law making USB C charging ports mandatory on gaming laptops, smartphones, headsets, handhelds, and tablets by 2027. The goal of the legislation is to simplify power interfaces across the technology scene in order to reduce electronic waste and make buying accessories an easier experience.

According to a European Parliament press release, the new law means “consumers will no longer need a different charging device and cable every time they purchase a new device.”

While the smaller devices will need to use common chargers by 2024, laptops will be given extra time to adopt USB C 2.1, which features 240W power delivery capabilities, eliminating the need for a barrel plug.

According to the EU, discarded chargers account for 11,000 tons of e-waste annually, so making USB C the standard should help stop the flow of all the obsolete chargers heading to landfills.
