Gaming Makes It To The Grammys

Video Games are coming to the Grammys! It was recently announced that a new category dedicated solely to video games will be introduced at the 2023 Grammy Awards.

The Recording Academy said that the award for Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and other Interactive media will recognize “excellence in score soundtrack albums comprised predominately of original scores and created specifically for, or as a companion to, a current videogame or other interactive media released within the qualification period.”

This is one of five new categories that will be debuted at the 2023 Grammy Awards. The other four categories that will be introduced at the award show include non-classical songwriter of the year, best alternative music performance, best American performance, and best-spoken word poetry album.

Amazingly, this is not the first major award show to finally recognize video games. On May 24th, The International Ten Dota 2 Championship matchup between PSG.LGD and Team Spirit took home the Sports Emmy award for Outstanding Esports Championship coverage. In case you forgot, Team Spirit wound up defeating PSG.LGD in a best-of-five series three games to two.

The 2022 Grammy Awards were held quite recently, on April 3rd to be exact. So, we will not have an idea of the nominees in this category for quite some time. Either way, it’s nice to see two of the most prestigious award shows in the world recognize the important role video games play in the entertainment industry.
