Is There A Piracy Issue In The Gaming Sector?

Based on a nationwide survey that utilized data from the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, it appears that video game piracy is expected to rise. This comes after a study showed that almost 10% of UK gamers have illegally accessed video game content over the last three months.

The survey shows that consumer prices have increased by 9.9% from August 2021 to August 2022. And, while many people have taken cost-cutting measures, 8% of UK gamers have opted to save money by accessing free and illegal gaming experiences. In fact, one in ten gamers has illegally downloaded or played a pirated copy of a video game in the last three months in order to save money.

The report shows that 30% of people access this illegal content through link sites while 19% have used ROM sites. 14% of those surveyed have reportedly chosen to make copies of a friend’s game for their own use.

When asked, 30% of responders said reducing costs was the main reason they illegally downloaded or pirated games. 15% said they wanted to boycott certain gaming brands. 13% said they were hoping to impress friends.

“With inflation set to increase, it’s clear video game piracy could also see a further rise in the run-up to Christmas, as gamers are clearly turning to alternative ways to fuel their passion,” an article from Advanced-Television reads.
