In late October, The NPD Group released its monthly sales report for this past September showing us the best-selling games in the United States. Additionally, this survey provided an overall view of the American gaming industry through the first nine months of 2022.
FIFA 23 was the best-selling game in the U.S. in September. It was able to overtake Madden 23 as the country’s best-selling video game. NBA 2K23 came in third place on the list followed by Splatoon 3 and The Last of Us: Part I.
Meanwhile, Elden Ring continues to be the best-selling game over the first nine months of this year. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has been the second-best game of the year through September. Madden 23 was able to usurp Pokémon Legends: Arceus for the third spot on the list. Horizon: Forbidden West is in fifth place on the list of the best-selling games through September of this year.
Despite new games entering the top ten, video game sales were down when compared to September 2021. Total video game sales have fallen by 4% from September 2021 to September 2022 while gaming content sales are down 7%.
“U.S. consumer spending on video game content, hardware, and accessories reached $4.1 billion during the month of September 2022, a decline of 4% when compared to the same month a year ago,” said NPD analyst Mat Piscatella.
