World Of Warcraft Legend Returns To Blizzard

Blizzard Entertainment recently announced that Chris Metzen had returned to the company as a creative advisor. This comes after he retired from his role as the organization’s Vice president of Story and Franchise Development in 2016.

“It is with great joy that I announce Chris Metzen has joined the Warcraft Leadership Team as Creative Advisor,” said Warcraft‘s General manager, John Hight, in a post on the game’s website. “Chris’s focus initially will be on World of Warcraft, then his work will expand to other projects across this growing franchise. Chris was one of the original team members working on the Warcraft universe back when it began in 1994, and we are so happy to be reuniting him with the world he helped create.”

Chris Metzen made a name for himself in the gaming industry by working for Blizzard from 1993 to 2016. During his original stint with the company, he had a hand in helping create numerous beloved titles like World of Warcraft, Overwatch, StarCraft, and the 2016 World of Warcraft movie.

The Profit‘s Take:

I have criticized Blizzard because they’re not focused on games anymore. Perhaps this is a departure from that business model, though. It was interesting that the PR mentioned him working on stuff outside of WoW, as if to hedge their bet and create some intrigue or mystery. Maybe they actually have other games in the works, but I doubt it. My guess is that the outcome here is binary. Either this hire will lead to another average expansion or the most hotly anticipated sequel of all time. What is sure though is that this will definitely cause fans to get their hopes up. Metzen clearly believes in his ability to do something amazing with this franchise. Otherwise, it isn’t worth the reputational risk to come back.
