Alienware and Cherry have begun working together to create the “first true” mechanical keyboard for gaming laptops. Beginning on March 18th, individuals who purchase Alienware’s M15 R4 or M17 R4 laptops will be given an option to upgrade them to a Cherry MX mechanical keyboard for an extra $150 at checkout.
According to The Verge, the laptops will now house a new type of Cherry switch called the “MX Ultra Low Profile.” The switch will be 3.5 mm thick, which is much smaller than the 11.9mm-sized MX Low Profile switch. The switch will be made of both stainless steel and thermoplastic polymer (which is built to withstand high temperatures).
This news comes after Alienware tweeted out a video that said the company was “introducing Project X” on March 18th. According to The Verge, the new keyboards are expected to have the “signature ‘thock’ sound that’s associated with mechanical keyboards.
