According to figures released by the gaming information firm Famitsu, the Japanese esports market grew by 9% in 2020. The research also shows that this trend is expected to continue over the next few years.
The reports said the size of Japan’s esports market will grow from $55.6 million in 2019 to $139.5 million by 2023. This will be driven by greater use of 5G services and more game providers entering the market over the coming years.
The number of individuals that went to esports events also increased by 42% last year. The report shows 6.9 million people attended an esports event in 2020.
The organization is projecting a steeper growth curve over the next few years. Esports revenues will reportedly increase by almost 30% year-on-year until the middle of the decade.
