Researchers from Hong Kong Baptist University are calling on the Chinese government to extend its support of esports. The scientists say that esports being featured in the 2022 Asian Games means that these events are about more than just “playing video games.”
Following this news, a new study from the university came out showing that many local residents support the development of esports. In fact, 72% of the people that responded to the survey said they think esports growth In Hong Kong should be supported by the government.
“The government should seize the opportunity to formulate a policy for the development of esports in Hong Kong, and deploy more resources to the upgrading of hardware as well as encouraging educational institutions to offer academic programs related to the industry to cultivate esports professionals,” said Professor Chung Pak-Kwong.
Hong Kong is one of the biggest cities in China. As of 2019, over 7.5 million people live in the region.
