Rovio Entertainment Oyj, the company behind Angry Birds, recently unveiled a long-term partnership with Moomin Characters Oy Ltd. As a result, Rovio has been given permission to develop and publish Moomin-branded games. Rovio also revealed it purchased a minority stake in Moomin for about $5.9 million.
As part of this agreement, Rovio now has the ability to develop and publish Moomin games on any platform. The company has also been given exclusive rights to create this content on all mobile gaming platforms.
“Working with Gutsy and Moomin will give us the opportunity to present this iconic brand to new audiences across the globe,” said Rovio Chief Executive Alex Pelletier-Normand. “Rovio’s first Moomin game, based on the original story and world created by Tove Jansson, and inspired by the Moominvalley visuals, is already being developed and we expect it to reach soft launch later this year.”
This current partnership is expected to last for six years. A six-year extension following the conclusion of the original deal is also possible.
