On October 20th, Riot Games announced the 2021 League of Legends World Championship finals will be broadcast in 70 movie theaters across Europe. Following this announcement, Riot launched a League in Cinemas website where individuals can find theaters near them that will be broadcasting the event’s matches.
“Can’t make it to Iceland this November? Don’t worry, because the biggest event in esports is coming to the silver screen! That’s right, after the success of 2019’s League of Legends World Championship Finals, we’ve once again teamed up with cinemas across Europe to screen the Worlds Finals live on the big screen,” Riot Games said in a recent blog post. “No matter the outcome, we’re sure to see some electrifying matches in the glorious return of the Worlds Finals. To find a cinema near you and book your tickets, head over to lolincinemas.com. If you can’t make it to a cinema, you can always catch all of the action right here at lolesports.com.”
The 2021 League of Legends World Championship finals will take place in Reykjavík, Iceland. A League of Legends world champion will be crowned on November 6th.
The Profit‘s Take:
I never understood the idea of getting people into movie theaters to play video games. That made zero sense. This makes a ton of sense for movie theaters, though. I’m sure it’s a very fun experience. However, this doesn’t move the needle at all for League. 70 theaters is a drop in the bucket for a tournament that will get 100 million viewers. It would make sense if the movie theaters are paying for this because they would benefit far more from this type of deal.
