2021 was a very good year for the esports tournament industry. According to SafeBettingSites.com, the total amount of money given out for esports tournaments increased by 60% last year.
2021 saw $201 million given out in prize money. This is a huge jump from 2020 which saw $124.9 million awarded to esports athletes for competitive events.
“The eSports trends in 2021 looked much better than the year before, but it would be wrong to say that a full recovery has been made,” said Vyom Chaudhary, an editor at SafeBettingSites. “The annual prize money in eSports was doubling every two years before the pandemic, and it would take some time to reach that level of growth.“
Over the last five years, the total amount of money given out as a result of esports tournaments has almost doubled. In fact, in 2017, the figure was only $117 million.
