Metaverse News Profit's Takes

Rocket League Live Now Available In Fortnite

Two of the most popular video games in the world are joining forces. This comes after Rocket League Live was introduced to Fortnite‘s Creative Mode, allowing the game to be used as a space to host watch parties for both local and international esports competitions.

Thanks to combined efforts from FNC404 and FiveWalnut, the Championship Field has been created in Fortnite. This will serve as a space for Fortnite gamers to watch Rocket League Championship Series matches from March 23rd to the 27th.

According to a series of tweets from Fortnite, players will be able to select their favorite teams, play mini-games in the area, and fill up a “Boost Meter,” which can unlock new items and abilities. Fortnite also said that “this is only the beginning,” when referencing the game’s future plans with Rocket League Live as the RLCS season progresses.

The Profit‘s Take:

It’s interesting to think about what the point of this is. Are we trying to get more people to log into Fortnite? Are we trying to turn Fortnite fans into Rocket League fans? There are a lot of different goals that could be accomplished with this move. I don’t want to give this more importance than it probably deserves. If what they’re doing is putting Rocket League matches on a virtual screen, that’s not that interesting. However, if this is an activation where you drop into Fortnite and sit in a virtual stadium where Rocket League cars are being rendered in Fortnite’s engine, that would have much more impact. I’ve always said tying different games and universes together is key to establishing The Metaverse. This seems like a simple example of that, but it could be an important one. If you can do it with Rocket League, then why can’t you do it with more complex games? I’m very critical of Fortnite and Tim Sweeney, but I like that they’re always trying a lot of different things.
