PlayStation Is Also Exploring Putting Ads In Video Games

It sounds like Microsoft is not alone in its controversial advertising plan. Sony is now reportedly interested in integrating advertisements into free-to-play video games too.

According to a recent report from Business Insider, this move aims to give developers a source of motivation to continue developing free-to-play titles while still being able to profit off their work. Moreover, the report said that Sony has not decided “if it will take a cut of ad revenue” or charge partners for data on customers’ spending habits.

“The goal is for the ads to appear like they’re part of the game, like digital billboards in sports stadiums,” the report reads. “Formats could include ads that give viewers rewards for watching ads and promotions for in-game items like avatar skins.”

As previously mentioned, the idea to put ads in free-to-play games was apparently first suggested by Sony’s rival, Microsoft. At this time, Microsoft is reportedly developing a program that will let brands showcase ads in free-to-play Xbox games. Sources familiar with this situation told Insider these new types of ads will not disrupt gameplay.
