Predicting The Best-Selling Game In America This Year

It’s sounding like Elden Ring will be the best-selling video game in the United States this year. According to Gamesindustry.biz, NPD Group analyst Mat Piscatella believes that Elden Ring will be the best-selling game in the country in 2022.

If this ends up being accurate, then it would be only the third time since 2009 that a Call of Duty game WASN’T the best-selling game in the US. As GamesRadar puts it, that’s a staggering feat when you realize a COD game has taken home the title 12 of the last 14 years.

The other games that beat out Call of Duty were both titles created by Rockstar Games. In 2013, Grand Theft Auto V was able to beat Call of Duty to take home the title of best-selling video game in the United States. Rockstar then accomplished this feat five years later in 2018 following the release of Red Dead Redemption 2.

We have been carefully tracking the ups and downs of Elden Ring since it came out on February 25th. As of May 2022, Elden Ring has been able to sell over 13.4 million copies worldwide. That was basically two months ago, so you can imagine that those sales numbers have only increased since then.

So, it’s possible that Elden Ring will eventually beat out Modern Warfare II when that game comes out this October. Only time will tell, but it’s looking more and more likely.

The Profit‘s Take:

For the last 14 years, the best-selling video game was a $60 box copy game. Maybe the $60 box copy game is still the king of business models? There aren’t a lot of big, AAA releases this year, so it makes sense that Elden Ring takes the top spot.
