On July 18th, it was announced that construction would soon begin on a permanent home for the University of North Dakota esports team. This venue, which is being designed by ICON Architectural Group, will have multiple rooms for esports athletes to train, compete, and learn in.
According to Brian Larson, the director of construction management at UND, work on the venue is expected to begin later this summer. He also said that the venue is expected to open at the end of 2022 or towards the beginning of 2023.
“This project is a full fresh start of the space and we’re really going to transform it into an exciting, high-tech, modern esports competition venue that will rival the space that any other university has in the upper Midwest,” Larson said.
Until construction is complete, the UND esports team will continue competing and training at the Nexus esports facility located at the UND Wellness Center. This facility is currently open to all students interested in playing video games.
UND is a public school located in Grand Forks, North Dakota. There are over 13,700 students enrolled at the university as of the 2021-22 academic year.
