This University Just Opened A New Esports Facility

The University of Hawai’i at Mānoa (UH) recently unveiled its new state-of-the-art technology facility, aimed at building valuable gaming and software development skills for students as well as local residents. The TRUE Esports + Tech Lab at Waipahu Public Library was unveiled to the public on July 14th, and featured a friendly exhibition match between University of Hawai’i students and Hawai’i Pacific University, televised live on ʻŌlelo Community Media.

“Participation by the UH esports teams highlights how vital our university’s program is to broader community planning for esports,” said Nyle Sky Kauweloa, Head of the UH Mānoa Esports Task Force in the College of Social Sciences. “The TRUE esports initiative will collaborate with the UH esports program by our providing instruction, mentorship and support to students from the Waipahu community, many of whom are underserved, with the technologies industry and through the relationships built between students who may never have imagined that they could attend college through esports.”

The lab will offer community members a chance to learn and earn a certification in foundational software game development and coding. Content will be available free of charge for any and all library members. The doors to the lab officially opened to students and the public on July 27th.
