According to GSD Market Data, 76.1 million video games were sold in Europe through the first six months of 2022, signifying a 13.5% rise from the same period the previous year. 32 million games were physical titles while an additional 44 million copies were sold digitally.
Germany made up the biggest part of the European market with almost 15.4 million games sold in the country. The UK came in second place with 14.3 million games purchased followed by France which generated 10.2 million game sales.
Understandably, the year’s most talked about game, Elden Ring, was also the most popular video game in Europe. FIFA 22 came in second place on the list followed by Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Grand Theft Auto V showed it’s still a favorite around the world coming in fourth place on that list.
Individually, each of these games had its own successes in certain countries. Elden Ring was the UK’s best-selling game while Pokémon Legends: Arceus took the top spot in Germany and France. Meanwhile, FIFA 22 dominated the list in Spain and Italy.
