Activision Sees Active Player Base Numbers Drop

Activision recently announced a drop in monthly active users (MAU) in quarter two ended June 30th. The MAU count totaled 94 million, down from 100 million in the first quarter. This drop marks the first time since 2019 that Activision’s MAU count dropped below 100 million.

The company said that its second quarter revenue and operating income declined “reflecting lower engagement for the Call of Duty franchise, but grew versus the first quarter.” Engagement for that franchise is expected to return with a vengeance in Activision’s fourth quarter, when it plans to release to new Call of Duty games: Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 in October, and Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0, which does not yet have a firm launch date.

“Activision’s expanded studios also continue to make strong progress on an innovative mobile experience that will extend Warzone to the largest and fastest growing platform,” the company said. “Across the Call of Duty ecosystem, the teams are well positioned to support these launches with substantial live operations while also continuing development of new premium content planned for 2023 and beyond.”

Clearly, Activision isn’t too worried about their falling numbers at this point in the year, as they expect both of those upcoming titles to provide them with a huge financial boon come fall/winter.
