Benedict College announced the launch of an esports gaming room and degree track, making them the first Historically Black College and/or University (HBCU) to offer such a program.

“It is a billion-dollar industry, it’s growing every year, and there is more opportunities, especially for African Americans and people of color in esports,” said Dr. Paula Shelby, Head of the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Department at Benedict College. “We have competitions at Benedict College, as well as out in the community, and then we always get invitations to compete at a national level.”

Dr. Shelby says that Benedict College will use their newly-launched esports degree program as a recruitment tool for prospective students, going into different neighborhoods and communities to spread the word.
