Here’s Everything We Know About The GTA VI Leaks

Rockstar Games has confirmed that the leaks of GTA VI that appeared online on September 18th were, in fact, real. However, despite the 90 videos of GTA VI that were shared on the web, the development of the game is reportedly not going to be impacted by this leak.

Rockstar Games published a statement on Twitter regarding the leak the very next day. The organization explained that “early development footage” was taken illegally from the company following a network intrusion. On top of that, Rockstar said it was upset with how this footage was shared.

“We are extremely disappointed to have any details of our next game shared with you all in this way,” the statement reads. “Our work on the next Grand Theft Auto game will continue as planned and we remain as committed as ever to delivering an experience to you, our players, that truly exceeds your expectations.”

For those of you that haven’t seen any of the videos, that were leaked, we’ll explain what you might have missed. The anonymous postings featured robberies, gunplay, fully-voiced conversations, and more.

Also, the footage basically confirmed that GTA VI would have a male and female protagonist. Additionally, it sounds like Vice City has been locked in as the setting for the upcoming game.

Obviously, the timeline for the game’s release is still up in the air currently. But, with this recent leak, I wouldn’t be surprised if we get an official GTA VI update soon.

The Profit‘s Take:

Let’s say they catch the guy that did the hack, and Rockstar wants to go after them. Are there damages here? This is kind of good publicity and free marketing. I don’t know if they can claim any damages. The hacker also said they would release more footage, but that just sounds like blackmail. If I’m the head of Rockstar, I’m not giving in to the blackmail attempt. Maybe Dr Disrespect’s method of game development is the way to go after all. It feels like there will be a leak at some point of ANY AAA game that is in development for years. When you have an operation that big over that many years, a leak feels inevitable. Maybe Rockstar shouldn’t have been this close-lipped about GTA VI. They should’ve leaked it themselves, that way they could have controlled the narrative. A cynical part of me believes this leak was planned by them and is not an accident. It would be unethical yet genius marketing. A leaked clip is exciting and titillating. An official release of gameplay footage would not get nearly the same amount of attention.
