Over the last 12 months, we have seen a ton of innovation come out of Japan, from gamer chopsticks to gamer beds. Now, the drink manufacturer Hitomaku is bringing another thing into the mix: alcoholic beverages.
Hitomaku recently released its debut canned sake products designed for gamers called Challenge Blue and Have Fun Red. This comes after the organization raised over $21,000 through a crowdfunding campaign.
The idea behind this geemingu nihonshu (“gamer sake” in Japanese) is that the beverage comes in a bottle-shaped can. In the past, bottles of sake “were too large” for gamers. However, Gaming Rainbow sake, as it’s called, serves as a solution to this problem.
“Personally, as someone who was previously employed at a game company, I’m exceedingly grateful for sake that’s for gaming,” said Yuji Tsuchida, the heads of the Tsuchida Sake Brewery. “We’re aiming for a flavor that makes gaming even more enjoyable when you drink it.”
At this time, an exact price for this product has not yet been announced. However, it is believed that this limited-edition sake will first be made available in Japan.
The Profit‘s Take:
There doesn’t seem to be any benefit to drinking this. I don’t really get it. I don’t drink alcohol, so I am trying to figure out the idea behind this. If anything, this would (most likely) negatively affect a gamer’s performance. Still, I kind of love this idea. Not necessarily the sake, but the idea of putting the term “gaming” in front of things. Gaming chairs, gaming mice, and, now, gaming sake. The list goes on and on. Alcohol has been growing in popularity from a business perspective. Maybe we soon will get Ninja-branded Vodka or TimTheTatMan beers. I feel like we have aged up as an industry to the point where we can finally put gaming and drinking together as a viable business opportunity. Sake is a kind of weird choice out of all the liquors and alcoholic beverages that are out there, but I guess it makes sense since this product is Japanese. My biggest problem here: the names.
